Tooth decay is one of the most common health problems, but it is also one of the most preventable. A few consistent habits make a real difference.
1. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride strengthens enamel and helps repair early damage. Brush for about two minutes, morning and night, and spit out the toothpaste rather than rinsing it all away.
2. Cut down how often you have sugar
Every sugary snack or drink starts an acid attack on your teeth. Keeping sweet foods to mealtimes means fewer attacks across the day.
3. Clean between your teeth
A toothbrush cannot reach between teeth, where decay often starts. Use floss or interdental brushes once a day.
4. Drink water
Water rinses away food and keeps your mouth moist. Choose it over sweet drinks.
5. Have regular check-ups
Your dentist can find early decay before it hurts and fix it with a small filling instead of a root canal or extraction. Ask how often you should come in, based on your own teeth.
For children
Supervise brushing until children can do it well themselves, and use the amount of fluoride toothpaste your dentist recommends for their age.
